Braintree’s MP James Cleverly, has welcomed the latest figures showing the number of local people claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance and Universal Credit falling by 50 since February 2016.
The official figures, which have been released by the Department for Work and Pensions, also show a record high national employment rate of 74.6 per cent.
Broken down figures show there were 135 claimants aged 18-24 in February 2017, 40 lower than February 2016.
Nationally, there are 106,000 fewer unemployed people than this time last year and long-term unemployment is at 393,000 – the lowest since before the 2008 recession.
In response to the figures and what it means for Braintree, James said:
“It can only be a good thing that less and less people in the Braintree area are relying on Jobseeker’s
Allowance or Universal Credit and are instead taking up work and receiving a regular pay”
He went on:
“Over the last few months I have been visiting a number of diverse local businesses across the constituency who employ local people and keep our economy moving. The recent job fair put on by Braintree District Council, reminds us all that there are lots of great job opportunities locally with over 35 local employers present to attract local job seekers.”
Speaking about the future, the MP said:
“To ensure continued success, I believe it’s essential to push for lower business rates; continue to demand sufficient superfast broadband in rural areas and upping the campaign to see the vital funding for redevelopment to the A120 to help show off our region as a potential economic hub. The government must also press ahead with welfare reforms to ensure that it always pays to be in work”
